Condor River Lodge is surrounded by several national parks, including the renowned Alberto de Agostini National Park, which is home to an array of fascinating and rare wildlife species such as the culpeo fox, chilla fox, leopard seal, dolphins, whales, sea lions, elephant seal, southern dolphin, and Chilean dolphin. The park is also a birdwatcher's paradise with 49 species of birds, both terrestrial and marine, belonging to 29 families, such as the rayadito, southern churrín, chercán, Dominican gull, petrel, fio-fío, giant woodpecker, and thrush. The evergreen Magellan forests in the park, dominated by the Magellan coigüe, make for a breathtaking backdrop for all the wildlife and bird sightings. With these unique and pristine views, our lodge provides an excellent opportunity for wildlife observation and photography enthusiasts to experience nature at its best.
We are also situated in close proximity to the renowned Karukinka National Park, which is a prime location for nature enthusiasts and conservationists. The park boasts vast expanses of primary forests of lenga and mixed lenga-coigüe forests of Magallanes. Its varied ecosystems, including peat bogs, Andean zones, Patagonian steppe, scrubland, and coast, are all representative of the unique southern biodiversity, which has local and global importance for conservation.
Karukinka is home to a plethora of native plant and animal species of the sub-Antarctic ecoregion, some of which are endangered. The guanaco, culpeo fox, tuco-tuco rodent, and huillín are among the species that thrive in this area. A large number of birds, such as the black-necked swan, Magellanic woodpecker, quetru duck, and birds of prey, also find their habitat in Karukinka. The park is also home to several species of native fish, lichens, and endemic mosses, which have been affected by the activity of introduced beavers.
Immerse yourself in the incredible world of birdwatching and discover the diverse avian species of the region. Embark on an excursion through the awe-inspiring Strait of Magellan to witness the impressive Black-browed Albatross (Thalassarche melanophris), the elegant Antarctic Tern (Sterna vittata), the charming Magellanic Penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus), and the imposing Giant Petrel (Macronectes halli) among others.
Continue your journey through the breathtaking landscapes of Patagonia, where you'll encounter a variety of birds, including the legendary condor (Vultur gryphus) and migratory species such as the arctic sandpiper (Calidris canutus rufus).
For a truly unforgettable experience, visit the King Penguin Park in the commune of Timaukel, where you'll have the chance to connect with the natural and cultural heritage of Tierra del Fuego. This conservation area is home to the only colony of King Penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus patagonicus) in South America, and witnessing these majestic creatures in their natural habitat is an incomparable spectacle. Standing at an average height of 90 centimeters, the King Penguin is the second-largest penguin in the world, after the Emperor Penguin. To ensure the preservation of the delicate ecosystem, we ask that visitors stay on established paths and respect the wildlife's natural habitat.
