Equipment

Preparing for a fishing trip can be exciting, but it's essential to make sure you have all the necessary equipment. At Condor River Lodge, we want to make sure our guests are fully prepared for their trip to Tierra del Fuego.

Clothing

What should I bring with me?

When it comes to clothing for fishing in Tierra del Fuego, it's important to be prepared for a variety of weather conditions. The region is known for its unpredictable weather, which can include strong winds, rain, and even snow, even during the summer months.

Here are some recommended items of clothing to bring:

  • Waterproof and windproof jacket and pants: These will help keep you dry and comfortable when fishing in inclement weather.
  • Warm layers: Fleece or wool layers are recommended to keep you warm on colder days.
  • Waders: Waders are essential for fishing in many areas of the river, as they allow you to stand in the water without getting wet. Make sure to bring waders that are appropriate for the weather conditions you'll be facing.
  • Wading boots: Sturdy wading boots with good traction are necessary for safely navigating the river's rocky bottom.
  • Hat and gloves: These items will help protect you from the sun, wind, and cold weather.
  • Sunglasses: Polarized sunglasses are recommended for fishing, as they help reduce glare and allow you to see into the water more easily.

It's also a good idea to check the weather forecast for the area before your trip and pack accordingly.

Fly Fishing

The Ideal Fly Fishing Equipment

When it comes to fly fishing, having the right equipment is crucial for a successful and enjoyable trip. At Condor River Lodge, we want our guests to have the best experience possible, which is why we recommend bringing your own fly fishing gear. This way, you can ensure that you have equipment that you're comfortable with and can trust. Below, we've put together a list of ideal fly fishing equipment to bring with you for a trip to the Condor River.

  • Rod: A 9-foot rod with a medium to fast action and a 6 to 8 weight line would be suitable for fishing on the Condor River. You can also consider a 12 to 14-foot two-handed rod if you're interested in spey fishing.
  • Reel: A fly reel of appropriate size for the weight line you are using and with a good drag system to help you control the fish in the river.
  • Fly line: For the Condor River, a floating line of 6-8 weight with a tapered tip to help you cast large flies and for fishing on the surface or in shallow waters is recommended.
  • Flies: Some flies you might consider for fishing in the Condor River are: Woolly Buggers in sizes 4-8, Sculpin in sizes 2-6, Nymphs (Pheasant Tails, Hare's Ears, Prince Nymphs) in sizes 12-18, and Dry Flies (Adams, Blue-Winged Olives, Elk Hair Caddis) in sizes 12-16.

Spinning & Casting Fishing

What about Spinning or Casting Fishing Equipment?

If fly fishing isn't your preferred method or you just want to try something different, spinning or casting fishing is also available at Condor River Lodge. Our guides can assist you in choosing the right equipment and techniques for this style of fishing. Below, we've put together a list of ideal spinning/casting fishing equipment to bring with you for a trip to the Condor River.

  • Rod: A 6-7 feet spinning or casting rod with a medium to fast action would be suitable for fishing in the Condor River. If you're looking to catch larger species, you can opt for a longer and more powerful rod.
  • Reel: A reel of appropriate size for the line you're using and with a good drag system to help you control the river's fish.
  • Line: For spinning/casting fishing, it is recommended to use braided or monofilament lines between 6 and 12 pounds resistance, depending on the species of fish you want to catch.
  • Lures: Some lures that you could consider for fishing in the Condor River are: spinners (Mepps, Panther Martin), spoons (Krocodile, Luhr-Jensen), jerkbaits (Rapala, Smithwick), crankbaits (Rebel, Bomber), and jigs with lead head.

Remember, switching fishing rods is sometimes necessary when fish are not biting the flies.
